While New York\u2019s very own St. Patrick\u2019s Cathedral may not be able to dress itself in shamrocks and celebrate, on the inside, it\u2019s surprisingly one of the greenest buildings in the city.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bridging The Past With The Future<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Construction on St. Patrick\u2019s Cathedral was begun in 1858, but it didn\u2019t open its doors to worshippers until 1879. Since then, it\u2019s remained a New York City landmark, bringing in over 5 million visitors through its doors each year. The cathedral is rightly proud of its traditions and history, so over the course of the last century, the exterior of the church has remained largely unchanged. But underneath the old-world facade lies an ultra-modern heating and cooling system that few of the cathedral\u2019s millions of visitors would guess is there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to 2017, the cathedral\u2019s heat was provided by oil-powered steam radiators, but after 60 years, it was time for a replacement. The church decided to look towards the future by switching to a geothermal heating and cooling system. They hoped to serve as an example to other historic buildings across the country, proving that eco-friendly initiatives don&#8217;t mean compromising the building\u2019s look and feel.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Choosing A Moral HVAC System<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Converting to a more renewable HVAC system fits perfectly with the cathedral\u2019s mission of serving the wider New York community. By reducing its carbon footprint, the cathedral is helping to make NYC a cleaner and more sustainable city. This philosophy aligns well with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/messages\/pont-messages\/2019\/documents\/papa-francesco_20190901_messaggio-giornata-cura-creato.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pope Francis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a long-time supporter of sustainability who has personally encouraged people all around the world to break their dependence on fossil fuels. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.6sqft.com\/st-patricks-cathedrals-new-geothermal-plant-is-up-and-running\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the words<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Monsignor Robert T. Ritchie, \u201cA consistent ethic of life does not compartmentalize these issues. It prioritizes life and the preservation of life at every level. One of the most basic ways in which we are called to do so is through responsible stewardship of our natural resources.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Financial Case For Geothermal<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cathedral is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/news\/2019\/02\/26\/st--patrick-s-cathedral-is-on-the-cutting-edge-of-going-green#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">largest building in Manhattan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that\u2019s making use of geothermal heat pump technology. Not only is geothermal a more sustainable option, it\u2019s a financially sound one too. The switch was \u201cthe most sustainable, cost-effective, long-term energy option for the cathedral\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/14\/nyregion\/st-patricks-cathedral-geothermal.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monsignor Ritchie said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The cathedral estimates they\u2019ve eliminated the cost of burning<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/14\/nyregion\/st-patricks-cathedral-geothermal.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 218 barrels of oil per year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reducing its yearly expenditures and carbon dioxide emissions by 30%. For a 76,000 square foot building, this equates to a reduction in 200,000 pounds of carbon dioxide annually, the weight of five tractor trailers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__gutter\">\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__gutter__right\" data-qa=\"message_content\">\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__blocks c-message_kit__blocks--rich_text\">\n<div class=\"c-message__message_blocks c-message__message_blocks--rich_text\">\n<div class=\"p-block_kit_renderer\" data-qa=\"block-kit-renderer\">\n<div class=\"p-block_kit_renderer__block_wrapper p-block_kit_renderer__block_wrapper--first\">\n<div class=\"p-rich_text_block\" dir=\"auto\">\n<h2 class=\"p-rich_text_section\">Bringing Geothermal To The Mass(es)<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although NYC is known for its harsh winters and sweltering summers, St. Patrick\u2019s has succeeded in keeping its building comfortable without a supplemental heating and cooling system.
