Less spoken of, but equally as important (we think), is that the country\u2019s 10 million citizens are among the world\u2019s most enthusiastic adopters of home geothermal technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A Nation Embracing Geothermal<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, it\u2019s estimated that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/media.geoenergicentrum.se\/2017\/02\/Gehlin_Andersson_2016_-EGC-2016-CU-Sweden.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one out of five homes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Sweden have a geothermal heat pump. Roughly 25,000 new geothermal heat pumps are installed there every year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[inline_zip]<\/p>\n<h2>Homeowner\u2019s Story: From Oil to Geothermal<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy old oil-based heating system was costly to run, so I decided to replace it with a system that is environmentally friendly, cost-effective and has a reasonable payback period,\u201d Swedish homeowner Stefan Eriksson said in an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mnn.com\/earth-matters\/climate-weather\/sponsorstory\/geothermal-heating-rocks-in-sweden\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published on Mother Nature Network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eriksson crunched the numbers and estimates he was able to reduce his home\u2019s carbon emissions by 95 percent by switching from conventional oil-based heating to a geothermal heat pump. He says his old system burned 925 gallons of oil each year, produced 9.4 metric tons of carbon dioxide and cost around $5,000 per year to operate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His new geothermal heat pump uses 6,700 kilowatts of electricity per year&#8211;roughly equivalent to 0.3 metric tons of carbon dioxide&#8211;and costs just $970 per year to operate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Roots of Sweden\u2019s Geothermal Success<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eriksson is not alone. Home geothermal systems first became popular in Sweden during the 1973 oil crisis, when the country was forced to ration gasoline and heating oil that winter. Today, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2017\/04\/who-s-the-best-in-europe-when-it-comes-to-renewable-energy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than half<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Sweden\u2019s energy comes from renewable resources like geothermal, solar, wind, wave, biofuels and hydroelectric plants. That\u2019s the highest percentage of any other nation in the European Union and over 5x the percentage of the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why Sweden Leads in Geothermal Technology<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers found the \u201cvast majority\u201d of Swedish geothermal heat pumps are vertical, closed loop systems (just like <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dandelionenergy.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dandelion\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Most drilling is through crystalline rock, according to a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/media.geoenergicentrum.se\/2017\/02\/Gehlin_Andersson_2016_-EGC-2016-CU-Sweden.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> presented last year at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/europeangeothermalcongress.eu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Geothermal Congress.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rock is a great material for geothermal drilling since it doesn&#8217;t cave in like sand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"50\" data-end=\"186\">The United States hasn\u2019t rationed fuel in decades. As a result, many American homes still depend on oil, propane, and gas heating. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But not without cost.
