Geothermal expert Jay Egg this week kicked off his three-month tour of New York state with a packed, hourlong Q&A session in New Paltz. Some 80 people squeezed into a large meeting hall at the New Paltz Reformed Church on Tuesday to get a detailed primer on renewable heating and air conditioning.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Combustion Heating Must Change<\/h2>\n

Heating and air conditioning consume <\/span>more than half<\/span><\/a> of a home\u2019s monthly energy needs. Combustion-based heating systems, those powered by oil, propane and natural gas, are a significant source of <\/span>greenhouse gas emissions<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2015, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo laid out an <\/span>energy plan<\/span><\/a> that promised to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the state by 40 percent from their levels in 1990 by the year 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot do that with combustion heating,\u201d Egg said. \u201cYou can\u2019t reach these goals without replacing combustion heating.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Missing Piece of \u201cGoing Green\u201d<\/h2>\n

Most people still have no idea there\u2019s a safe, affordable, eco-friendly alternative to traditional heating and air conditioning systems, Egg said. When the average homeowner decides to \u201cgo green,\u201d they typically invest in better insulation, install solar panels and buy an electric car. He said investing in renewable heating and air conditioning is the last piece of the puzzle. It is crucial to truly reducing your home\u2019s carbon footprint.<\/span><\/p>\n

How Geothermal Systems Work<\/h2>\n

Geothermal systems use the ambient temperature of the Earth to generate a year-round supply of renewable heating and air conditioning. The system requires a dedicated appliance called a ground source heat pump. This pump uses technology more commonly found in kitchen refrigerators.<\/span><\/p>\n

Real-World Examples of Geothermal Success<\/h2>\n

I<\/span>n his presentation, Egg described a number of successful geothermal projects he\u2019s helped design.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2012, the <\/span>Florida chapter of the Sierra Club<\/span><\/a> moved its operations into the state\u2019s first \u201cnet zero\u201d commercial building, in St. Petersburg. A geothermal heat pump handles the building\u2019s heating and air conditioning. Rooftop solar panels generate all of its electricity needs onsite.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year, Egg checked in with the chapter\u2019s senior organizing manager, who said they were \u201c<\/span>extremely happy<\/span><\/a>\u201d with the building\u2019s geothermal HVAC system four years after installing it. <\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s estimated some <\/span>50,000 geothermal heat pumps<\/span><\/a> are installed in the U.S. each year. <\/span><\/p>\n

In New York\u2019s Hudson Valley, successful examples include Bard College\u2019s 107,000-square-foot, Frank Gehry-designed <\/span>Fisher Center<\/span><\/a> in Red Hook, and geothermal heat pumps at the 405-acre <\/span>SUNY Sullivan<\/span><\/a> campus in Loch Sheldrake. Several hundred local homeowners have installed smaller geothermal systems at home.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tour Continues Across New York<\/h2>\n

Egg\u2019s <\/span>tour continues with stops<\/span><\/a> in Westchester County, New York City, Long Island, Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse through mid-November.
