If you live in New York state, the answer, statistically, is \u201cvery.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York recently ranked #1 on WalletHub\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wallethub.com\/edu\/most-and-least-energy-efficient-states\/7354\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the country\u2019s most energy-efficient states, with a score of 90.2 out of 100. In 2015, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/energyplan.ny.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York State Energy Plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which set out a 15-year roadmap for the state to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent from their 1990 levels, purchase half of its electricity from renewable sources and generate a 600 trillion Btu increase in energy efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Geothermal Rebates for Homeowners<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of the plan includes a $15 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyserda.ny.gov\/About\/Newsroom\/2017-Announcements\/2017-05-30-NYSERDA-Launches-15-Million-Initiative-to-Spur-GSHP-Market\">geothermal rebate<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, which provides one-time rebates of around $6,000 to homeowners who replace their conventional HVAC equipment with a geothermal heating and air conditioning system.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Measuring Efficiency<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In their study, WalletHub analysts looked at energy efficiency rates among homes and cars, using federal data. New York ranks #1 in auto energy efficiency, and #4 in home energy efficiency. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>WalletHub analysts found that Alabama, Louisiana, and South Carolina were the least energy-efficient states in the country. Their cumulative scores were 32.4, 31.7, and 21.5, respectively. According to the federal Office of Renewable Energy &amp; Energy Efficiency, these states offer no public-purpose-funded energy efficiency programs.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By comparison, New York state and its various utilities companies earmarked <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/energy.gov\/eere\/femp\/energy-incentive-programs-new-york\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly $900 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2014 toward energy efficiency incentive programs, the government said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Energy Costs by State<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier in the year, WalletHub published a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wallethub.com\/edu\/energy-costs-by-state\/4833\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">separate study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the states with the highest and lowest monthly energy costs. Connecticut was the most expensive, with homeowners spending an average of $380 per month on utilities and gas for their cars. Just a few states over, homeowners in Washington D.C. had the country\u2019s lowest energy costs, at $219 per month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On average, homeowners spend at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/energy.gov\/sites\/prod\/files\/energy_savers.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$2,000 per year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on energy costs, with the bulk of their energy spent on heating, cooling and hot water. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Case for Geothermal Heat Pumps<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geothermal heat pumps are the most efficient form of electric heating. They provide up to three times more heat than the energy they use.
