The theme for Women’s History Month 2026, designated by the National Women’s History Alliance, is “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future”. This theme celebrates women who are building stronger communities, advancing equity, and developing systems for long-term environmental, economic, and social sustainability.

In celebration of our own company’s history for this month, we’re sharing a Q&A with Dandelion founder and CTO, Kathy Hannun. Kathy co-founded Dandelion in 2017 after incubating the company within Alphabet’s X Lab. She has been recognized as a CNBC Changemaker, a TED Fellow, one of Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business, in MIT Technology Review’s “35 under 35,” and as the recipient of a C3E Award from the U.S. Department of Energy. She earned her B.S. in Civil Engineering and M.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University.

1. Q: When you co-founded Dandelion in 2017, what problem were you most urgently trying to solve?

Kathy: The urgent problem was the decarbonization of heating, which is often the “forgotten” giant of carbon emissions. Most people focus on cars or solar panels, but burning natural gas, fuel oil and propane for heat is incredibly carbon-intensive and expensive. Heating and cooling alone account for approximately half (51%) of all energy consumed in the average American home.

At Google X, we saw that geothermal was technically superior but commercially broken. It was too expensive, too “custom,” and lacked the standardization and cost efficiency that comes with scale. We wanted to turn a complex construction project into a streamlined consumer product to make fossil-fuel-free heating the obvious financial choice, not just the moral one.

2. Q: As Dandelion approaches its 10th year, what milestone makes you most optimistic that the “geothermal moment” has finally arrived?

Kathy: We are seeing a rapid alignment of policy and scale. Specifically, the Big Beautiful Bill provided a long-term runway with the 30%+ tax credit, which gave the industry the stability to invest in better hardware and made business models like the geothermal lease or geothermal-as-a-service possible in the US for the first time.

But beyond policy, it’s the grid reality. As the combination of AI, heat waves and cold snaps put more pressure on the electrical grid, utilities are realizing that geothermal is incredibly valuable: it’s the most efficient way to heat and cool, significantly reducing peak demand compared to air-source heat pumps. We aren’t just a “nice-to-have” anymore; we are a grid-stabilization tool.

3. Q: Dandelion has leaned into new construction… How does that strategic shift accelerate the original mission?

Kathy: The mission has always been about mass adoption. While retrofitting existing homes is vital, it’s a house-by-house battle. New construction allows us to go “neighborhood-wide.” By partnering with developers to install geothermal loops before the homes are even built, we eliminate the friction of individual sales and drilling logistics. It accelerates the mission by making geothermal the default standard for new homes rather than a premium upgrade.

The builders we’re working with have seen that customers prefer buying homes with geothermal installed – the geothermal makes homes easier to sell – and this dynamic is paving the way for geothermal to become the new standard.

4. Q: Who or what has influenced how you think about building a company with an environmental mission?

Kathy: The “X” (formerly Google X) mindset was foundational; the idea of “10x vs 10%.” Making any type of change is hard, so why not go after the impactful, ambitious problems that have the potential for significant impact? I’ve always sought a career devoted to honoring and preserving the natural world for future generations. My strategy has been to find the “less charismatic” problems in this vein (like home HVAC / drilling) and apply high-level engineering to them. The overlooked problems have a lot of potential if you can identify the ones with potential for impact, because there’s inherently a lot less competition and they’re less “picked over”.

I’ve also been influenced by the concept of pragmatic environmentalism. I believe that for an environmentally superior solution to win, it has to be truly better and cheaper than the incumbent. You can’t build a mission-driven company solely on the “goodwill” of customers; you have to build it on a superior value proposition. That is what draws me to geothermal: it’s a better product, a less expensive product, and it happens to be the most environmentally sound way to heat and cool.

5. Q: For someone early in their career in clean tech, what do you wish someone had told you?

Kathy: I wish someone had told me that “The hard stuff is where the value is.” In clean tech, there’s a temptation to stay in software because it’s faster and “cleaner” to scale. But the biggest levers for the planet are in the physical world, not just in bits. It’s related to the idea of chasing the “less charismatic” problems. Don’t be afraid of the “hard” tech: the drilling, the manufacturing, the logistics. I didn’t know anything about these things when I started, but I’ve learned. If you can solve a difficult physical constraint, you create a moat that is hard for anyone else to cross.

Thank you to Kathy for sharing her journey since 2017 and stay tuned for our upcoming 10-year anniversary in 2027!

The housing market is complicated right now for everyone, including those who build AND those who buy homes.

Consumer demand remains strong, and home sales are expected to increase by 14% nationwide in 2026. However, in many places, demand is significantly outstripping supply, creating an urgent need to build more housing.

At the same time, rising costs, steadily high interest rates, and economic uncertainty are making buyers pickier about where they put their money.

Notably, as one BUILDER analysis explains, consumer confidence is at levels not seen since the Great Financial Crisis. Buyers are very attuned to a home’s sticker price and long-term expenses.

Communities are also increasingly moving toward all-electric designs to avoid the logistical delays of legacy gas systems and deliver high-performance, modern homes. The pressure to keep this shift affordable for the builder and the buyer is certainly top of mind.

As the industry gathers for several conferences this year, including the International Builders’ Show, Builder Connections, Builder Innovator, and many more, top builders are looking at every side of the business for ways to differentiate and gain a competitive advantage. We’re here to share a new way to affordably heat and cool today’s homes (and why more and more home tours are starting in the basement!).

Geothermal heat pumps tap into the earth’s stable underground temperatures to deliver highly efficient heating and cooling.

Here are 5 ways geothermal is helping builders stand out and sell faster in 2026.

#1 Flexible financing and payment options that make the decision a total no-brainer

For a long time, the upfront cost of geothermal heating and cooling made it prohibitively expensive for the average homebuyer. Geothermal was a niche, complex upgrade for early adopters or sustainability-focused homeowners.

No longer!

Now, homebuyers can access geothermal for as little as $10 to $40 per month (typically a small fraction of their energy savings), and builders can install geothermal as affordably as traditional HVAC units.

The bottom line: now you can offer a premium HVAC solution that makes housing more affordable.

#2 High performance that keeps costs down.

In 2026, buyers are asking for low bills and energy predictability.

Zillow’s 2026 Housing Market Predictions note that buyers are looking to stretch their budgets with energy-efficient, climate-resilient upgrades and smart-home integration.

Beyond the mortgage payment, HVAC typically tops the list of expenses for most homeowners, so integrating high-efficiency heat pumps immediately reduces monthly costs.

Geothermal systems are 2 to 4 times more efficient than air-source systems because they use localized energy from the ground.

With geothermal heating and cooling, buyers can expect a 50-70% reduction in utility bills. That’s a value proposition buyers can trust.

#3 Ditch the noisy AC units/outdoor condensers.

Traditional air conditioners and air-source heat pumps are loud, unsightly, and take up valuable space. By dropping a bulky unit on the side of the house, it takes away from your patio, porch, or yard, that’s meant to be lived in!

Until now, they’ve also been nonnegotiable. Homeowners aren’t looking to suffer through sweltering summers for an aesthetic upgrade.

Geothermal heating and cooling eradicates the compromise. Outdoor equipment is no longer required, allowing buyers to reclaim the value of their yards and increase the home’s actual value.

#4 Start the tour in the basement

Number 4 in the “5 Ways Geothermal Differentiates” is a personal favorite.

Housing tours are predictable: explore the kitchen, gauge the living room, and browse the bedrooms. Novelty is often elusive. There isn’t much to see that hasn’t been seen before. Unless the home includes a theater or home gym, the tour rarely features the basement.

Geothermal is a premium pillar feature that builders can use to differentiate. Only 1% of homes in the US today feature geothermal, and those are primarily made up of custom, luxury homes. Geothermal adds a brag-worthy, sought after feature homeowners can feel excited about.

As an added bonus, geothermal heating and cooling keeps the homebuilder’s costs down. Because these systems are built to last, they are highly durable and reliable, reducing warranty calls.

It’s tried, trusted, and genuinely novel. You might just start the next tour in the basement.

#5 Future-proof your business

The regulatory landscape is changing quickly.

With more areas implementing gas-line bans and pushing for all-electric mandates, getting ahead of the curve is just smart business.

Standardizing geothermal now means you don’t have to scramble when regulations catch up, and it eliminates the financial burden of gas line extension costs that are no longer being socialized.

Plus, it’s one less utility trench you have to worry about on-site.

A Better Building Solution

Geothermal is the best, most efficient, effective, cost-conscious, durable, and sustainable HVAC product on the market.

The benefits are multifaceted. It differentiates your homes while providing a product that buyers love. Geothermal systems increase home values, reduce construction costs, and lower homeowners’ utility bills by up to 50%.

We hope you’ve gained helpful insights with these 5 ways geothermal differentiates your new builds in a competitive market! Ready to see how Dandelion can help you differentiate your next project? Let’s build something better, together.

Like many states across the country, the Maryland housing market has been challenging for both builders and home buyers.

For the home buyer side of things, Maryland is short 100,000 homes. The supply-and-demand equation is severely misaligned, and prices have been climbing for years.

On the builder side, the cost of connecting to an aging natural gas system is rising, and communities prefer homes that are all-electric and high performing. Lot sizes are becoming denser, home buyers are facing affordability pressures, and not to mention, the builder market is becoming more and more competitive.

However, a massive shift is taking place. While Maryland is building homes as fast as possible, we’re seeing a change in how we build that could finally offer some relief. Geothermal heating and cooling has officially moved from a niche luxury to the most attractive, affordable standard for builders and homeowners across the state.

Here’s why the ground is shifting in Maryland in 2026 and how we’re leading the way to bring efficient and affordable heating and cooling to the state’s residents.

Geothermal Heating and Cooling At Scale

For a long time, geothermal was that cool, high-efficiency tech reserved for custom builds.

No longer.

At Dandelion Energy, we are focused on production homebuilding, leveraging economies of scale to reduce costs and increase availability. Instead of moving a drill rig for a single day to one house, we’re mobilizing rigs for months at a time across entire communities.

It’s a proven model for affordability and efficiency, allowing us to slash installation costs by nearly 50%!

Local leaders like EYA show exactly how it’s done. In partnership with Dandelion, EYA is integrating geothermal heating and cooling into its new home construction, allowing it to meet new regulatory standards (like the gas bans we’re seeing in places like Montgomery County).

They are achieving this while keeping costs under control, delivering value to builders, buyers, and communities.

See how we piloted this type of deployment with Lennar in Colorado.

Financials That Actually Make Sense

Let’s talk about money.

As the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) explains, “Geothermal heat pumps are the most energy-efficient, environmentally clean, and cost-effective systems for heating and cooling buildings.”

Historically, this green choice carried a premium… Not in 2026.

We’ve introduced a leasing program that is an absolute game-changer for Maryland.

Instead of the upfront cost, homeowners can now access geothermal for as little as $10 to $40 per month. Realizing that’s typically less than what these homeowners would save on their monthly energy bills, the decision becomes a no-brainer.

The result is three-fold:

A premium feature that builders can use to stand out.

Home buyers benefit from lower overhead costs from day one.

A cleaner, quieter, and safer way to build (no outdoor condensers, no carbon monoxide).

On top of that, the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) is leaning in with grant opportunities. The program incentivizes the installation of ground-source heat pump (GSHP) systems at scale in new residential construction developments.

MEA will provide a per-GSHP installation incentive to residential builders, developers, housing authorities, or eligible business entities that install GSHP systems in qualifying new construction residential developments. MEA anticipates that $2,000,000 will be available for the program in 2026.

The bottom line: It’s never been easier or more affordable for Marylanders to access geothermal heating and cooling!

A Win for Maryland’s Energy Grid

While these changes create huge wins for home builders and buyers, there’s another player winning big as geo enters the mainstream: Maryland’s Grid.

As the state pushes forward toward electrification and phases out gas, the grid faces a serious challenge.

Standard air-source heating and cooling systems can create massive demand spikes. This happens in the summer and winter months when there is extreme heat or cold outside, and therefore, higher temp control usage inside.

Geothermal systems, however, introduce a solution that uses a fraction of the energy and electricity of their alternatives (hence the lower utility bills!). By using the earth’s stable underground temperature, their systems are 2-4 times more efficient, especially during these peak demands.

Stable Comfort, Static Costs

We’re incredibly excited to be part of the growth in Maryland. We’ve already designed over 200,000 tons of these systems and partnered on neighborhoods across the DMV that thousands of people now call home.

Ready to see how this fits into your 2026 plans?

Whether you’re a builder looking to differentiate your next project or just someone tired of high energy bills, we’re here to help you make the move. Let’s build something better, together.

2025 Recap: This was a historic year for geothermal heating and cooling. Once a niche luxury, it has now entered the mainstream.

At Dandelion, we aren’t just watching this shift—we are driving it. By partnering with national and regional builders to deploy this technology at scale, we are providing superior comfort and savings for homeowners, reducing grid strain, and ultimately creating a path for an affordable clean energy future.

Why the Future of Geothermal is Built-In

Dandelion has installed thousands of geothermal heat pumps since 2017. Building on that foundation, we reached a staggering milestone: installing over one million linear feet of ground loops. While our roots are in retrofitting existing homes, 2025 marked a strategic pivot toward new construction. By making this shift and integrating geothermal into the very foundation of new communities, we’ve unlocked benefits that were previously out of reach:

Massive Cost Reduction: High-volume installations in focused locations allow us to practically eliminate mobilization costs.

Standardization: We’ve standardized vertical loops to integrate seamlessly into the production homebuilding process.

Grid Resilience: Geothermal reduces peak demand on the coldest winter days by more than 60%, offering a “virtual power plant” effect for local utilities.

Breaking Ground: The Largest Residential Deployment in US History

This year, we made the leap into large-scale production housing. Specifically, we are proud to highlight our partnership with Lennar to bring geothermal to 1,500 new homes in Colorado. This marks one of the largest geothermal deployments in U.S. history.

However, Lennar is not alone in this movement. We are also working with innovators like EYA are also setting a new standard for sustainable urban development. By working with national and regional leaders, we are proving that geothermal isn’t just a premium add-on; rather it is a scalable, cost-effective solution for the modern builder.

A Growing Foundation of Policy and Progress

This momentum is being further supported by a wave of state-level progress and investment. Across the country, new policies and favorable tax credits are making geothermal the most attractive investment for developers and homeowners alike. We’ve seen states double down on geothermal through increased rebates and geo-forward legislation, recognizing that this technology is the most efficient way to decarbonize the building sector.

A few key state and local incentives driving growth include:

Colorado: Xcel Energy other provide substantial rebates, up to $25,000 to builder for high-efficiency, all electric homes, and the state offers a $2,000 tax credit for ground-source systems.

New York: Homeowners can access utility rebates up to $25,000 and a 25% state tax credit (up to $10,000).

Maryland: Empower Maryland offers rebates up to $4,950 per home for high efficiency, all electric geothermal, plus Geothermal Renewable Energy Credits.

Massachusetts: Mass Save offers $16,500 builder rebate per home for high efficiency homes heated and cooled with geothermal.

Beyond individual savings, the macro impact is clear: widespread adoption of geothermal heating and cooling over the next 20 years could eliminate the need for 24,500 miles of new grid transmission lines, producing annual grid savings of $4 billion.

2025 Wrapped: Leading the National Conversation

As geothermal moved into the spotlight, Dandelion’s leadership was invited to share our vision across the airwaves. Dandelion CTO Kathy Hannun joined David Roberts on the Volts podcast to discuss how we are finally removing high upfront cost barriers and scaling ground-source technology.

But the conversation didn’t stop there; in fact, our team joined several other industry-leading programs to discuss the intersection of real estate, technology, and climate:

Built in America: Discussing the future of sustainable construction with Kathy Hannun.

Association of Professional Builder Builders: Wyatt Roberts, Dandelion’s Head of New Construction, explores how builders can leverage geothermal for climate resilience.

Commercial Real Estate Pro Network: Highlighting the efficiency gains of geothermal in the commercial and multifamily sectors with Director of Business Development, Bryan Roberts.

Expanding Access and Affordability

Building on this public momentum, 2025 marked the year that Dandelion officially launched a first-of-its-kind leasing program this year. More specifically, this new model allows builders to integrate geothermal systems into their communities for significantly less than traditional HVAC, reducing upfront expenses while delivering premium, high-performance homes that stand out in today’s competitive market.

Because of this model, new homebuyers can access geothermal for as little as $10–$40 per month, typically a fraction of their energy savings, bringing clean, affordable comfort to more homes than ever before.

In addition to these direct savings, we also leveraged favorable tax credits and new policies to make geothermal an increasingly attractive investment. Combined with state, local, and utility incentives, geothermal becomes the most cost-effective heating and cooling solution for new home construction.

Winner of the 2025 Brilliance Award

We are proud to wrap our 2025 recap with a major accolade: Dandelion Energy won the 2025 Brilliance Award in the HVAC/IAQ category from the Builder Innovator Awards. This award recognizes the most impactful and innovative solutions in the homebuilding and home technology sectors, and we are honored to be recognized among the industry’s best.

Looking Ahead to 2026

As we enter 2026, we are working with more builders than ever before. However, the challenges are still there: energy prices remain volatile, homebuyers are facing home ownership affordability pressures, and home builders are looking for ways to stand out against competition. As a result, geothermal provides an opportunity to differentiate, providing a modern, reliable, cost cutting solution. Ultimately, we look forward to bringing the most efficient heating and cooling solution to even more homes in the coming year!

Dandelion’s proprietary heat pump, the Dandelion Geo, pushes the boundaries of heat pump efficiency and output using proprietary technology

ARLINGTON, Va. — September 17, 2024 — Dandelion Energy, the nation’s leading home geothermal company, today announced the national launch of its revolutionary geothermal heat pump, the Dandelion Geo.

After installing thousands of geothermal heat pumps, Dandelion created the geothermal heat pump it wished existed. The Dandelion Geo has the highest heating efficiency of any heat pump on the market, delivering heat at an unprecedented low cost. In addition, the Dandelion Geo is able to heat air to a higher temperature than other heat pumps using its proprietary technology, making it compatible with ducts found in existing homes, especially older and larger homes. These very low airflow capabilities also result in exceptionally quiet operation.
Dandelion partners with residential geothermal contractors throughout the Northeast to provide drilling and ground loop installation services. In August 2024, Dandelion drilled a residential geothermal project in Belchertown, MA, as an example of this work.

The Belchertown, MA home sat tucked into the forest, just off the road. While a wheeled rig may have been able to access the front yard, drilling there would require trenching across the driveway because the homeowner’s heating system was located on the left side of the house, on the top of the above picture.

Optimized for Residential

With our tracked rig and separate compressor, we were able to locate the borehole on the side of the house right next to where the geothermal heat pump would be located, keeping the trench short and the equipment out of the way of the homeowner’s driveway.

Keeping Job Sites Clean

In addition to the rig and compressor, Dandelion can bring a custom dumpster to jobs that will benefit from it to collect spoils and keep the site clean. We run a custom umbilical from the rig to the dumpster, funneling the spoils directly into it for containment. Note how clean the homeowner’s side yard is, even in the middle of the drilling process. This plays a critical role for suburban homes in densely populated neighborhoods.

Simplified Drilling

Our rigs are small and lightweight. Our compact rigs let us access tight spaces, work with small crews, and avoid using auxiliary equipment normally needed to lift heavy drill rods.

Here you can see one of our drilling team members easily moving a rod into position without external equipment.

This photo, taken right after drilling, shows how we kept the site clean.

Dandelion typically drills 4.5” boreholes for our residential projects and installs 1.5” u-bend pipes. This photo shows the u-bend pipes coming out of the borehole before grouting has taken place.

A specially designed truck delivers the drilling rig and dumpster. It then collects both at the end of the job in order to drive them to the next location.

Dandelion’s single-family residential drilling suite optimizes equipment for residential job sites. By keeping it clean, using smaller drill crews, and straightforward transportation logistics, Dandelion makes it easy for homeowners to install geothermal.
